Can you read people online? - Dave Cairns

The most common thing people asked me about playing poker online

On the digital native thing, I think that one of the things we're experiencing right now, most cohorts have the same view of (hybrid, remote, distributed) work that many people had about poker online. They assume that you cannot get the same outcomes out of it - Dave Cairns

And on average, they’re probably right because both sides (digital natives vs non-digital natives) that are interacting in this digital environment are not adequately skilled to do it - Dave Cairns

But you can if you have the right skills, I don't think it can't be done. I think it's just a matter of teaching people and having a willingness because there's resistance - Dave Cairns

Dave's experiences directly comparing the digital world, vs the physical world, in this case, professional poker can be generalized to the digital tools, and digitization of many things, including work.

Non-digital natives often incorrectly assume that the same outcomes can't be achieved via digital platforms. That's not necessarily a valid assumption. And while it easy to point out the corner cases, the lesson here, especially for those who grew up in a different time, and are less familiar or comfortable with modern digital tools, especially work platforms, is to lessen the resistance and learn.

I don't gamble, I'm not endorsing gaming. It can get you in trouble.

I am endorsing the lessons in this story, that digital tools are powerful communication vehicles, and we all need to get better at using them.
Drop the assumptions, get trained, practice, and be amazed at what digital tools enable.

Really interesting conversation with someone not afraid to listen to the data, and push past preconceived notions.
