In Germany, post-World War Two, there was a movement called ‘Bürolandschaft’ which was ‘Office Landscape’ an idea that an office should have a variety of spaces that people could go to for different things - Ryan Anderson
Herman Miller, in the early sixties, felt like we could take that to the next level, and created the first modular furniture, movable walls, desks, stand-up workstations, a variety of things that we only recently have come to really appreciate. The idea was that people would move through these spaces, throughout the course of their day, and they would experience a variety of cool spaces to support whatever they were doing - Ryan Anderson
Desktop computing drastically changed offices as we know it. The highly modular furniture basically became a pathway for cables to get from the closet to the PC. - Ryan Anderson

and can design spaces for people rather than cables. Cloud computing, 5G, Wi-Fi-6, powerful handsets, and laptops enable workplace professionals to design for people, not power drops and ethernet cables.
