What's your take on AI regulation and governance?

I like building great products that change people's lives. That's the essence of what I like doing. I don't want anybody coming between me and the product and the person who uses it. Nothing. - Chet Kapoor

Having said that, for all technology waves until this one, I would have said, "Ahh, don't worry about governance and regulators and all that." But this one, because of what we talked about earlier—this being more human-like than anything else—I think I'm really glad that we are getting people involved. - Chet Kapoor

My request would be that the people who work on this should be people who understand the technology a little bit. . That is the one thing that I want. I want policymakers involved in this to take the time to understand the technology and the basics of it. They don't have to become programmers, but they should be well-versed - Chet Kapoor

We didn't do a good job with social media.
We didn't do a good job with privacy.
We need to do a better job with AI.

It's easy to regulate autos, to legislate around our short comings (we're bad drivers) with seat belts, anti-lock brakes, crumple zones, air-bags, etc.

It's harder to see the extensive 'damage' done by algorithms optimized for $$ at the expense of everything else.

Mental health issues, sleep disruption, loneliness, bad eating behaviors, isolation, privacy and security risks, and more.

Europe was able to come together and agree as a collection of nations on GDPR for privacy and data regulations

There are models in the California Consumer Privacy Act and others in Virginal, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Iowa and Texas.

No one likes heavy handed regulation.
But we all benefit when food handlers wash their hands before tossing our salad.
Nothing is not the right answer.

Thanks for taking the tough question that goes against bias Chet.
More from this very thoughtful conversation with someone who's been through a number of these computing 'epochs'
